f20-12 Behind the Lens: Keith Fernandez

As a young boy I used to take apart my father’s cameras to see how they worked; something so simple which can capture beautiful things. I still have an interest in old cameras; they were so beautifully made.

My real interest in the medium of photography started when I got my first camera when I was 21. The shapes, the angles, the contrasts, the scale of the image captured all fascinate me. The frozen image makes you see something, which could be very ordinary, in a different way. It freezes and frames a moment and it forces you to take time to look at it rather than just rush past, like you do in your daily life. The still image has its own life which juxtaposes from real time, it has its own narrative.

My main interests are documentary photojournalism, architecture, portraits and nudes. Being involved in the GPN, in a group with such a variety of experience, helps keep my interest in photography fresh. I learn and get inspired by the people in this group.
